Saints
Extend Winning Streak To Three
Jan. 15/12
Following
the MJHL Trade Deadline, which saw the Saints acquire 20 year
old Drew Scurfield and 19 year old Richard Olson, the Saints
have won back to back games and are now enjoying a three game
winning streak. With the wins, the Saints have improved to
23-17-5 and have pulled to within 6 points of second place
in the tight Addison Division.
The
Saints first game following the Trade Deadline was on Wednesday,
Jan 11th in Waywayseecappo. 19 year old Myles Nykoluk opened
the scoring at the 7:35 mark of the opening frame, with the
assists going to Patrick D'Amico and Conner Lockhart. The
Saints out shot the Wolverines 14-10 in the first period.
Jon Gaudet extended the lead with his 13th of the year while
on the power play, as Patrick D'Amico and Drew Scurfield earned
assists at the 2:07 mark. After Wayway pulled to within one
midway through the second period, Richard Olson picked up
his first goal with his new club to regain the two goal advantage.
Chartier and Gaudet had the assists as the Saints took a 3-1
lead into the third period. The Olson-Chartier-Gaudet line
would strike again midway through the final period as Chartier
scored his 29th of the season following a nice passing play
to make it a three goal lead. Wayway would score with just
over two minutes remaining however the Saints would earn the
two points with a strong road performance as they travelled
home with a 4-2 victory. Teagan Sacher made 37 saves to earn
the win as Wayway outshot Winnipeg 39-36. The Saints went
1 for 7 with the man advantage and were perfect on the penalty
kill, as Wayway went 0 for 4.
The
Saints returned home for their first game of 2012 at the Civic
Centre as they took on the OCN Blizzard on Saturday. The Saints
defeated the Blizzard 3-1 in OCN a week ago to finish off
their two game northern road trip. It took only 2:03 for the
Saints to strike first as once again Myles Nykoluk opened
the scoring with a great individual effort. Sean Collins and
Patrick D'Amico connected to spring Nykoluk who cut in and
scored short side over Matt Krahn's shoulder to make it 1-0.
The two clubs would exchange scoring chances throughout the
period, however Addison Herosian and Krahn would keep the
score at 1-0. OCN would capitalize on a 2 on 1 rush midway
through the second period to tie the game at one. The Saints
would out shoot the Blizzard 11-10 in the middle frame as
the game remained tied at one after 40 minutes. The Blizzard
would score at 6:43 of the third period to take a 2-1 lead.
Jon Gaudet would capitalize on two nice passes from Brett
Chartier and Richard Olson just over three minutes later while
on the power play to tie the game at two. The game seemed
to be headed for overtime however Brett Chartier would bank
a shot off of Krahn from behind the net with only :27 seconds
remaining to make it 3-2. Paul Crane and Jason Gardiner earned
the assists on Chartier's 30th of the season. Following a
Saints' timeout, Winnipeg would keep OCN to the perimeter
as they picked up their third straight win. The Saints went
1 for 3 on the power play while going a perfect 3 for 3 on
the penalty kill. Both clubs sent 31 shots on goal and Addison
Herosian earned the win. The Saints will now host the Dauphin
Kings on Tuesday at the Civic Centre. Puck drop is scheduled
for 7:30pm.

Finish Off 2011 With Overtime Loss In Selkirk
Jan. 1/12
Playing
their first game since a week before Christmas in Altona,
the Saints traveled to Selkirk for a New Years Eve clash with
the Steelers.
Both
teams had plenty of chances in the first 40 miinutes with
a total of 50 shots directed at the goaltenders. It wasn't
until the third period before either one was beaten. On the
powerplay five minutes into the final period, Petrash scored
his 10th of the year to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. Selkirk
tied it up with 2:38 remaining and the teams headed to overtime.
The Steelers controlled overtime with the only five shots,
the last one beating Herosian, giving the home fans an early
New Years celebration with a 2-1 OT victory.
The
Saints start 2012 with four straight road games, visiting
Dauphin on January 4th and than their two-game northern trip
on the 6th and 7th versus Swan Valley and OCN respectively.
The Saints first home game of 2012 is on Saturday, January
14th versus the OCN Blizzard.

Four
Games In Five Nights Puts Saints On Roll
Dec. 6/11
A
busy string of four games in five nights see's the Saints
on a five game winning streak.
Friday
night, the Saints started their weekend traveling to Neepawa.
The Natives opened the scoring on the powerplay but the Saints
countered with one of their own when Gardiner found the back
of the net. A minute and a half later, Gingera gave the visitors
a lead they wouldn't relinquish. The Saints would lead 3-1
after one on Gaudet's late goal. Both Chartier and Scott would
score in the second to make it a commanding 5-1 lead after
40 minutes. Chartier's second of the game, this time shorthanded,
extended it to 6-1 before Neepawa would score two to make
it 6-3. Gingera's goal in the final minute would make it a
7-3 Saints final.
Back
home for Saturday night, the Saints hosted the Steinbach Pistons.
The Saints came out fast and scored :21 in as Gaudet beat
the Pistons netminder. But that lead was short-lived as Steinbach
scored :29 later to even it up. Gaudet's second of the game
three minutes in would regain the Saints lead but the Pistons
did it again and tied it up shortly after. The third lead
of the game for the Saints came off the stick of Petrash 12:21
in and the opening period would end 3-2 Saints. The never-say-die
Pistons tied it up AGAIN with the only goal of the middle
frame and we headed to the third tied at three. There was
no scoring until the final 3:20 when Chartier's snap shot
gave the Saints another lead and Crane extended the lead to
two with just under two minutes remaining. A Pistons goal
with :27 left would make for a final final seconds but the
Saints held on for the 5-4 victory.
With
both teams playing their third game in three days, the Swan
Valley Stampeders finished their weekend taking on the Saints.
With players from both teams looking tired, the offensive
chances were numerous for both teams and both goaltenders
stood on their heads. With a goal in the first and another
early in the third, the Stampeders looked to close out their
trip with a win. But the Saints were going to make them work
for it. Gardiner's 21st of the year would make it 2-1 2:21
into the third and Scott's 10th with 8:22 left would tie it
up. With no further scoring in regulation and overtime, a
shootout was in order. Gingera was the first shooter for the
Saints and scored and that held up until the final Stampeder
shooter who beat Sacher to extend the shootout. It would take
eight more shooters before another goal was scored, again
by the Saints and this time by Scott. That left it up to Sacher
to stop the Swan shot, which he did, earning not only the
game's first star but also an important victory.
Finally,
tonight the Saints traveled up the Yellowhead again, this
time to Dauphin to take on the Kings. Just like Saturday's
game versus Steinbach, everytime the Saints scored, the Kings
would get one of their own. Gingera opened the scoring 6:25
in with his 8th of the year but four minutes later Dauphin
got it back. Nykoluk would give the Saints a 2-1 lead in the
final minute but twenty seconds later, Dauphin would even
it up before the end of the period. Cannon's second of the
year two minutes into the secondmade it 3-2 and that held
up until a King's powerplay goal with 5:19 left. The Saints
regained the lead as they headed to the third when Scott scored
his 11th with 4:11 left. A late penalty to the Saints was
all Dauphin needed to even the score as they'd even it up
at four with 2:12 left. Overtime solved nothing so the teams
headed for another shootout. This night it was a little different
for the Saints as they had little trouble beating the opposing
goaltender as Gingera, Scott, and Chartier all converted to
give the Saints their 5th win in a row, 5-4.

Chartier
Named Manitoba Pork Peak Performer of the Month for October
Nov. 16/11
Brett
Chartier of the Winnipeg Saints believes in making a difference
in his community. And it’s that quality which earned the veteran
forward the Manitoba Pork Peak Performer of the Month for
October.
Chartier,
20, has been honoured with this award for his unconditional
commitment to his community and unselfish volunteerism. While
enjoying a strong month on the ice, Chartier also works hard
away from the rink with persons with special needs.
“Brett
is responsible for two individuals with special needs and
brings them to practice regularly to be around the team and
hang out in the dressing room with the players,” MJHL Commissioner
Kim Davis said of Chartier. “These two individuals love being
with Brett and around the Saints players. Brett manages to
play an important role with the Saints as team captain, attend
university courses and make a difference in the lives of individuals
with special needs throughout the season.”
Chartier,
who hails from Winnipeg, leads the Saints in scoring with
16 goals and 27 points: six goals coming via the powerplay.

Saints
Look To Build On Big Win
Nov. 14/11
Following
last Thursday's big win over the crosstown rival Blues, the
Saints looked to repeat Saturday night.
The
Saints jumped into an early lead on Gardiner's 17th of the
year 3:13 in. That lead was short-lived as the Blues tied
it at one two minutes later. The visitors held a 2-1 lead
after twenty minutes on a goal with 4:19 left. Gorrie's tied
it up with just under three minutes gone in the second and
the teams would head into the third even at two. The final
20 minutes was all Blues as they scored three, one on the
powerplay, to make it a 5-2 final.
Sunday
night, the Saints, looking to redeem themselves from Saturday
night's third period meltdown and a loss earlier in the season
to the Natives, hosted Neepawa. Both teams had numerous chances
in the first but the score remained tied at 0 despite a total
of 25 shots taken. Gingera opened the scoring two minutes
into the second with his 5th of the season. Gorrie's third
goal in three games made it 2-0 before the midway mark of
the period. A Neepawa goal with :11 remaining made it 2-1
Saints going into the third. The Natives would tie it up early
in the third but Chartier's 19th of the season two minutes
later through traffic would regain the Saints slim lead. Gardiner's
18th of the year with two and a half minutes left increased
the lead to 4-2. With Gardiner off for two minutes, Neepawa
pulled their goalie for the extra attacker but that just gave
the game's 1st star, D'Amico, a chance to increase his goal
total as he sealed the game with an empty netter and a 5-2
Saints lead. Neepawa scored on the powerplay in the final
minute to make it a 5-3 final in favour of the Saints.

Herosian
Leads Saints to Victory in Steinbach
November 2, 2011
The
Saints traveled east to Steinbach on Wednesdday night looking
for an important two points against the divisional rival Pistons.
After
Sundays disappointing 3-2 OT loss in Winkler, the Saints hoped
to come out strong but it was the Pistons who struck first,
5:22 into the game. Petrash tied the game with 10 minutes
later and Wiwchar gave the visitors the lead going into the
intermission, scoring with 43 seconds left.
The
2nd was all Pistons, outshooting the Saints 18-7...but not
outscoring them. Herosian stymied his former squad, stopping
everything they threw at him. In the meantime, Craig Scott
was able to beat the Pistons netminder with five minutes to
go to make it a 3-1 Saints lead after 40 minutes.
In
the third, Steinbach made the most of their chances, potting
two to take the game to OT. With nothing settled in OT, it
came down to the dreaded shootout. With Petrash scroing on
the Saints second shot and Herosian holding off both Steinbach
shooters, all that was need was for Saints captain Chartier
to bury it, which he did, and the visitors headed hom ewith
a 4-3 shootout victory.

The
Week In Review
October 20, 2011
The
last week has been a rollercoaster ride for the Saints.
After
falling 4-2 to the Portage Terriers last Friday, the Saints
had a home and home series with the Pistons on Saturday and
Sunday. Saturday night saw the Saints explode for nine goals
to triple up the Pistons 9-3. As the saying goes "Should
have saved some for the next game." as Sunday was a different
story as the Pistons were now in front of their home fans.
The game went to a shootout where Steinbach handed the Saints
a 4-3 loss. Wednesday included a leisurely afternoon bus ride
on the Yellowhead to take on the Neepawa Natives that night.
The Saints fell behind early, battled back, but were never
able to get closer than a goal and the Natives had their first
win of the year, 5-3.
The
Saints schedule continues this weekend as they visit divisional
rival Portage Terriers Friday night and return home Saturday
night for an important matchup against the Swan Valley Stampeders.
Gametime is 7:30.

Strong
Start Helps Saints Defeat Steelers
October 12, 2011
The
Saints travelled to Selkirk on Tuesday to take on their divisional
rivals, as both clubs looked to build off a successful showing
at the MJHL Showcase.
Tuesday's match up was the second of the season between the
two clubs, as the Steelers knocked off the Saints 7-2 back
on Sept 24th. Both teams came out firing on Tuesday, as they
combined for 27 shots in 20 minutes of action. 17 year old
Patrick D'Amico would open the scoring at the 10:23 mark when
Tyler Wiwchar and Corey Petrash connected to send D'Amico
on a breakaway. The former Winnipeg Wild would make no mistake,
beating Rewucki with a quick shot. The Saints would add to
their lead when Brett Chartier finished a nice passing play
while on the power play at the 16:32 mark. Chartier would
cap off an impressive road period by scoring his second of
the night two minutes later to give the Saints a 3-0 lead
after 20 minutes.
The
Saints would make it 4-0 when they took advantage of a 5 on
3 power play. Dylan Pascoe would set up Chartier who scored
his 3rd of the night and 9th of the season just over two minutes
into the middle frame. The Steelers would get on the board
two minutes later when Evan Laye would just manage to beat
Teagan Sacher. The score remained 4-1 going into the third.
The
third period would see the Steelers cut the lead to two at
the 8:59 mark. The Saints would then kill off a two minute
minor to maintain their two goal advantage. With only minutes
remaining, the Saints would go on a 5 on 3 power play, however
it was the Steelers who scored on a breakaway with :14 seconds
remaining to make it 4-3. Craig Scott would win a defensive
zone face-off with seconds remaining to secure the 4-3 road
victory. Teagan Sacher made 45 saves to earn the win and Corey
Petrash was named second star (2 assists) and Brett Chartier
was named first star (3 goals).
The
Saints return to action on Friday when they host the Portage
Terriers at the Civic Centre. They will then take on the Steinbach
Pistons on Saturday at the Civic Centre before travelling
to Steinbach on Sunday. Puck drops at 7:30pm on Friday and
Saturday.

Saints
Earn Split At Showcase
October 9, 2011
Coming
off an overtime loss to the Winkler Flyers on Tuesday, Oct
4th, the Saints headed to the MTS Iceplex on Friday for the
annual Old Dutch-MJHL Showcase.
The
Saints took on the Dauphin Kings in front of dozens of CIS,
NCAA, WHL and NHL scouts as they looked to continue to improve
their overall record. The Saints came out firing, as 18 year
old Shane Gingera scored :39 seconds into the game. Dauphin
would respond with their first power play marker of the night
to tie the game at one four minutes later. The Saints would
respond two minutes later when Corey Petrash would find the
back of the net. Petrash's first career MJHL goal was followed
by a goal from rookie defenceman Sean Collins as the Saints
would take a 3-1 lead into the intermission.
The Kings would pull within one only :45 seconds into the
middle frame, however Dylan Pascoe would respond for the Saints
:15 seconds later to restore the two goal lead. Unfortunately
penalties would play a major role in the second period, as
the Saints gave the Kings three more power play opportunities,
including a 5 on 3 advantage late in the period. Dauphin would
take advantage, scoring with :53 seconds remaining in the
period and :0.4 seconds remaining to tie the game at 4 after
40 minutes.
The
third period was evenly matched, with both teams exchanging
scoring chances. After the Saints hit the goal post, Dauphin
came back with just over two minutes remaining and capitalized
to take a 5-4 lead. Dauphin would add an empty net goal to
hand the Saints a tough 6-4 loss.
Looking
to bounce back on Saturday at the Showcase, the Saints faced
off against the Waywayseecappo Wolverines. The Saints outshot
the Wolverines 6-5 during a slow paced opening 20 minutes,
as neither team generated many scoring chances. The Saints
came out in the second period and 20 year old Tyler Wiwchar
would score at the 5:59 mark to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
Wiwchar would score his second of the night only 1:18 later
to add to their lead. The Wolverines outshot the Saints 13-11
in the second period.
After
killing off five penalties throughout the game, the Saints
took advantage of a power play of their own. Paul Crane and
Craig Scott connected to set up Corey Petrash with a cross-crease
pass that the 17 year old rookie buried into the back of the
net, giving Winnipeg a 3-0 lead at the 11:54 mark. Unfortunately
the Wolverines would spoil 17 year old Teagan Sacher's shutout
bid with only 2:42 left, but that's as close as it would get,
as the Saints improved to 4-5-1 with a 3-1 victory. Sacher
would make 32 saves to earn his second career MJHL victory.
The
Saints will now have Sunday off before practicing on Monday
as they prepare to take on the Steelers in Selkirk on Tuesday
night. The Saints return to the Civic Centre on Friday, Oct
14th when they host the Portage Terriers. Game time is 7:30pm.

Saints
Take Two Over Weekend
October 1, 2011
The
Saints looked to overcome their early season scoring struggles
as they took on the Blues and the Wolverines.
Friday
night at the IcePlex, the Saints jumped out to a three-goal
lead after one on powerplay goals by Crane and Mitchell and
a short-handed effort from centre ice by Chartier. With no
scoring in the second, the Saints just needed to play safe
for the road victory. The Blues made it 3-1 twenty two seconds
in but Gingera replied later in the period and the Saints
took it 4-1.
Saturday
night at the Civic Centre, rookie goaltender Teagan Sacher
got his first career MJHL start. It was a bit rocky as the
Wolverines had a three goal lead midway through the game but
that changed in a hurry. Crane with two goals late in the
second made it 3-2 with the third still to come A five-goal
offensive explosion in the final period on goals by Gingera,
D'Amico (his 1st Junior A goal), Gardiner, Gaudet and Scott
gave Sacher his 1st Junior A victory, 7-3 over the Wolverines.

Chartier
Leads Saints To First Victory of 2011/12
September 25, 2011
It
took four games but the Saints have hit the win column for
2011/12.
Sunday
night at the Civic Centre, the Saints hosted the Neepawa Natives.
And it only took 1:39 before the home squad hit the board
as Gardiner netted his second of the year. With under six
minutes remaining in the period, Chartier made it 2-0 with
his first of the night. The
second saw Neepawa tie it at two, first on a penalty shot
4:30 in and another with 5:35 left.
The
final period saw the Saints come out firing, outshooting the
Natives 19-8. Chartier's second made it 3-2 5:15 in and his
third with 8:20 left looked to put the game away at 4-2. However,
a Neepawa goal with under two minutes remaining would make
it a one-goal game at 4-3. Fortunately, with the Neepawa net
empty in the final minute, Crane would hit the open net for
a 5-3 Saints victory.

September 16th, 2011
The
Winnipeg Saints are pleased to announce that they have acquired
20 year old goaltender Addison Herosian from the Steinbach
Pistons and 20 year old Charlie Pogue from the Winnipeg Blues.
Herosian comes to the Saints after spending the last two seasons
with the Steinbach Pistons. The veteran goaltender and Winnipeg
Wild (MMAAAHL) graduate was acquired in a trade which saw
the Saints trade 17 year old defenceman Danys Chartrand and
future considerations to the Pistons. Herosian posted a 4.21
goals against average and a 89.2% save percentage with Steinbach
last season.
Pogue
was acquired from their crosstown rival Winnipeg Blues in
exchange for future considerations. The Winnipeg, MB native
and Winnipeg Wild graduate has spent the last two seasons
with the Blues. The 6'2" netminder had a 86.2% save percentage
and a 4.42 goals against average with the Blues last season.
The
Saints would like to welcome both Charlie and Addison to the
organization. The Saints would also like to thank Danys for
his contributions to the hockey club and wish him best of
luck with the Pistons.

Improve to 5-0 in MJHL Pre-season Action
September 7, 2011
The
Saints improved to 5-0 during the pre-season on Tuesday night
as they defeated the Winkler Flyers by a count of 6-1.
With
a young line-up dressed for the Saints which included six
16 year olds and five 17 year olds, the Saints played an impressive
road game that limited Winkler's opportunities. The Saints
were powered by four power play markers on Tuesday night that
came off the sticks of Remi Laurencelle (16), Corey Petrash
(17), Shane Gingera (18) and Geordie Maguire (16). The Saints
also received goals from Michael Gorrie (18) and Myles Nykoluk
(19). Alex Moodie (16) and Michael Newman (17) were perfect
in net while Alcide Grenier (18) gave up the lone Flyer goal
early in the third period.
With
strong performances from many of the players in the line-up,
the Saints Coaching Staff and Scouting Staff will now have
difficult decisions to make as they head into their final
three Exhibition Games. The Saints currently have 36 players
in camp, with the expectation that they'll be releasing more
players in the coming days.
The
Saints defeated the Steinbach Pistons on Thursday by a count
of 5-4 and also earned a 4-3 victory over the Flyers at the
Civic Centre on Saturday. The team will now travel to Neepawa

G.M. and Head Coach David Anning announced today that the
club has solidified their coaching staff for the upcoming
2011/12 MJHL season.
Returning
as an Assistant Coach for his second season will be Mike Gordichuk.
Gordichuk returned to the Saints for his second stint as an
Assistant Coach prior to the 2010/11 season and will once
again be behind the bench as the Saints move into their new
home. Also returning for his second season with the club is
Goaltender Coach Krister Toews. Due
to personal reasons, Assistant Coach Dustin Hughes has decided
to pursue other coaching opportunities.
“I
would like to thank Dustin for all his hard work and dedication
to the organization,” said Anning. “Hughey is a very hard
working and innovative coach with a bright future ahead. I
very much enjoyed working with him last season and wish him
all the best moving forward.”

addition to our staff. He is very knowledgeable and will be
able to relate well with our players.”
Following
an impressive playing career with the Selkirk Steelers, which
included two MJHL Turnbull Cup Championships and a First Team
All-Star Selection, Bartley moved on to the University of
Manitoba Men’s Hockey Team on a scholarship. He then went
on to play professionally in Great Britain and served as a
Player/Coach in the Premier Division. Upon returning to Canada,
Bartley won two Allan Cup National Senior Championships as
a player. As a result, he will be inducted into the Manitoba
Hockey Hall of Fame this fall in the team category. Most recently
he has been coaching in the Pembina Valley and Central Plains

“I’m
thrilled to be joining the Winnipeg Saints this season,” said
Bartley. “The opportunity to join David and Mike and work
with a respected franchise in the MJHL was too good to pass
up. I’m looking forward to helping the organization continue
to create a winning environment.”

Rob Terin and Trainer AJ Reimer will both be returning for
the upcoming season. Terin was instrumental in organizing

G.M. and Head Coach David Anning. "We're very excited for
Jordan and his family. This is a great opportunity for him

To Call Civic Centre Home
June 7th, 2011
The
Winnipeg Saints of the Manitoba Junior Hockey League are excited
to announce that they will be returning to the City of Winnipeg
for the 2011/12 MJHL season.
After
playing at the St. Adolphe Community Centre and Arena last
season, the Saints will return to Winnipeg and play out of
the St. James Civic Centre. The organization is entering their
45th season in the MJHL and the ownership group of one of
the storied franchises in the league is excited to be back
in Winnipeg.
The
Civic Centre has seating for 1,500 fans and is an ideal junior
hockey facility. The Saints have played at the Civic Centre
in April 2008 and 2010, when they captured the Addison Division
title and advanced to the MJHL Championship series. The St.
James Canadians played in the MJHL until the 2002/03 season
and called the Civic Centre home.
"We're
very excited to be returning to Winnipeg for the upcoming
MJHL season," says Saints' G.M. and Head Coach David Anning.
"The community of St Adolphe was very accommodating to us
last season however we felt that it was important for our
players and organization to return to Winnipeg. The move to
the Civic Centre provides us with an opportunity to continue
to play in a suitable junior hockey facility with all the
amenities we require on site. We're excited to move forward
at our new home."
"Throughout
the process of ensuring the Saints had an arena to call home
within the city limits, thanks have to go out to Clive Wightman
and Phil Sheegl of the City of Winnipeg and Councillor Gord
Steeves," added Anning. "As well, Tom Miller and the St James
Canucks organization along with the St James Minor Hockey
Association were all very helpful in working together to accommodate
our transition."
The
Saints have already started the transition to the Civic Centre
in preparation for their August Training Camp.

Hardy had 12 goals and 13 assists
With
the 4th overall selection in todays MJHL draft, the Saints
were pleased to select Ryan Pruden from the Bantam 1 Winnipeg

goals and 21 assists in 30 games. In the recent WHL draft,
Ryan was selected in the 13th rd by the Saskatoon Blades.
In
the 2nd round, the Saints picked outside of the perimeter

Broncos
With
no pick in the 3rd round, the 4th saw the Saints move back
into the city selecting defencman 5'11" 165 lb Josh Sarbiewski

Saints
Prepare for 2011 MJHL Draft
June 3rd, 2011
The
Saints scouting staff and coaches will look to welcome impact
players to the organization and build off previous success
at the MJHL Draft as they head to Russell, MB on June 5th
for the annual Bantam Draft.
The
Saints will be selecting 1996 born players in the new look
draft as they hope to select future Saints players. "Our organization
has been very successful at the MJHL Draft and that's a direct
result of all of the hard work our scouts, both past and present,
have put in," says Saints' G.M. and Head Coach David Anning.
"We've had very dedicated people work within the organization
over the years and our current scouting staff is very dedicated
to selecting not only quality players but quality people as
well. We're very fortunate to have these guys putting in so
many hours throughout the fall, winter
and spring months to ensure we have as much information possible
at our disposal."
The
Saints have six scouts working within the organization. Along
with Head Scout Daryl Anning, Kim Ridd (Provincial Scout),
Pete Goertzen (Regional Scout - Pembina Valley) and Tom Papaioannou
(Regional Scout - Winnipeg) will be involved in the selections
at this year's Draft. Grant McGinnis (Northwest US) and Bruce
Sirrell (High school) are also part of the scouting staff.
Between the four scouts, they will have watched over 1,200
hockey games this season and it's that knowledge that the
club will rely on at the draft table on June 5th.
"The
amount of time these guys put in is truly amazing. Whether
they're travelling to weekend tournaments or taking in weekday
games, these guys always seem to be at a rink. Each of our
scouts has his own opinion on players and we have great discussions
about players leading up to draft day," explains David Anning.
The
MJHL Draft will have a new format this year, as clubs will
be allowed to identify and protect two draft eligible players
from within the team's protected zone. These selections must
be submitted one week prior to the Draft. The Draft will then
consist of six rounds, with all 1996 born players who were
not protected eligible to be selected by any MJHL team.
"While
the format for the Draft has changed this year, it still allows
each team to protect 2 players from within their own zone,"
says Head Scout Daryl Anning. "This is very important as it
immediately identifies young players who the community can
anticipate seeing in the near future." The Saints will have
the 4th selection overall as well as the 4th selection in
the 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th rounds. The selection order is based
on last season's final standings.
"We
know we will be selecting a very good player with our first
round pick. Obviously it's very important to pick a player
that fits into our model. We want smart hockey players who
understand the game and compete hard," says the G.M. and Head
Coach.
"With
the Draft being reduced to 6 rounds it is extremely important
that scouting staffs do their homework. You need to ensure
your selections will play for your team at some point as you
no longer have the luxury of being able to select a player
in hopes he eventually develops enough to play," added Daryl
Anning. "I know our staff has done a good job in this area
and we are really looking forward to this year’s draft. As
a staff we will be prepared." Many of the current and future
Saints players were selected by the organization during the
bantam draft.
This
is a very exciting time for all the 1996 players and their
families in Manitoba along with the entire Saints organization.
Follow all the draft selections at www.manitobajuniorhockeyleague.com
and www.winnipegsaints.ca on June 5th.

"Brad
is a true leader and quality individual on and off the ice.
We're very happy that he has decided to attend Minot State
and continue his playing career while attending university,"
offers G.M. and Head Coach David Anning. "Brad has proven
that he is an elite defenceman who is capable of playing important
minutes and I'm sure Minot State is be very happy to secure
an excellent player and person for next season."
The
Minot State Beavers play in the ACHA and compete against schools
such as North Dakota State University, University of Oklahoma,
University of Arizona and Arizona State University to name
a few.
Beavers
Head Coach Wade Regier commented on Brad committing to MSU.
"Brad is one of the biggest recruits in our program's history.
He turned down multiple NCAA Division III offers to commit
to playing for us, which is a blessing for us. With Brad's
skill set, he is going to have a major impact on our program
as a freshman. Brad was also an assistant captain of the Saints
for the past two seasons and we are certainly going to look
forward to his leadership."
The
Saints would like to thank Brad for his contributions to the
organization over the past three seasons and would like to
wish him continued success with his hockey career.
